The flexible multikopter who isn't breaking at blow

Last year engineers from Laboratory of intellectual systems of the Ecole polytechnique federale de Lausanne (EPFL) is created have submitted the concept of the flying drone at which masts with engines could be disconnected from the case at blow. And automatically to fasten back, reducing risks of damages at accidents. Now they have gone further and have created a design which breaks differently, keeping properties of rigidity and flexibility at the same time.

modern robotics is faced by one tricky task. Cars with the rigid case strong, but too heavy and at an overload it is irreversible break. And designs with flexible base survive, but aren't capable to bear freight and to use tools. It seems, the Swiss engineers have managed to find a key to the solution of this task – the project manager, Stephano Minchev, argues on the system of controlled rigidity.

The flexible multikopter who isn't breaking at blow

at the heart of the idea lazht observations of insects, at many of which to strong chitinous and very large case small and thin mnogosustavchaty pads fasten. They are also strong, but can be deformed without damages, assuming blow. Engineers have repeated the idea, having created knot from three plates, two of which provide it rigidity, and the third is responsible for mobility.

By default, at normal flight, vectors of application of forces force firm plates to rest each other that creates effect of a rigid support. And in a non-staff situation when the car touches with a mast an obstacle, the vector of force changes and the design breaks, bent in the field of a flexible plate. That then to return to a starting position. Without energy expenses, in the passive mode, saving a multikopter from irreversible damages.

Not always the robot has to have the powerful and rigid case. The rigid design is good in many cases, but not when it is required to keep working capacity after falling or a jump. In this case the soft case will be preferable. Researchers of Harvard University have printed on the robot 3D-printer
